Antoine Bechamp was the long time rival of Louis Pasteur...
While Pasteur argued for the germ theory, that microbes cause disease, Bechamp claimed that the growth conditions, the milieu was the true cause of the appearance of both disease symptoms and overgrowth of particular microbes that are always present in the microbiome.
Very few microbes have been found to fulfill Koch's Postulates for a truly infectious disease...
These are:
- The microbe must be abundant in the diseased organisms and absent in healthy organisms.
- The microbe must be isolated and grown in a pure culture.
- The cultured microbe should cause the disease when introduced to a healthy organism.
- The microbe must be isolated again from the inoculated organism and be identical to the original microbe.
Cholera was the first infectious bacterium thought to fulfill Koch's criteria, as demonstrated by Koch himself.
However, Koch was later forced to abandon the applicability of his absolute rules, because Cholera bacteria were also found in healthy people.
He also found that, like Cholera, Tuberculosis bacteria failed to cause disease in all healthy hosts.
The same is now known to be true with many potentially infectious diseases including Typhoid, Polio, Herpes, HIV and Hepatitis C...
The difference in this case is not the microbe, but the Terrain...
