He found that cancer grows in an acidic and hypoxic milieu.

He was able to both cause and cure cancer by controlling oxygen availability. 

Cancer cell respiration is limited to fermentation in the cytoplasm... The mitochondria, which produce over 90% of the ATP in a healthy cell, are not functional.

The fact that cancer cells continue to ferment lactate even in the presence of oxygen, a phenomenon known as the Warburg effect, confirms the fundamental mitochondrial dysfunction.
